Social Media Don’t be Task Driven

Social Media Strategy

Social Media Strategy

In a social media world where every blog has posts on 10 ways to XYZ it’s easy to see why many can get drawn into the doing before doing too much of the thinking.

All to often social media campaigns fall down because they start downstream, they are focussed around platforms or content or interactions. Twitter is the hot new kid on the block so let’s have some, rather than creating a well rounded social media strategy that’s aligned with business objectives.

If you start upstream it will be easy to see where everything fits in, creativity may be needed, in some cases just downright hard work, but you can’t prescribe the approach until you know where it’s going and how it fits in with everything else.

Upstream is where the thinking takes place, downstream is where the thinking is implemented and tasks are carried out.

Do you hire an agency? That’s decided upstream, formulating strategy is all about opportunity and capability, is there an opportunity that suits our goals and if so do we have the capability to take advantage of it?

Once you have a strategy you can start to formulate a plan, select platforms, decide on content and how to interact.

Whatever you do, don’t be task driven or creative driven, neither will work if you don’t have a social media strategy.

I’m going to put together a little toolkit that will hopefully help people easily put together a social media strategy and sell it to their boss, I will update this post when it’s online.

ROI this!

My day job is performance marketing, getting a quantified return for a set amount of cash, it’s what we do at TSW Towers, but even I know that sometimes it isn’t always possible, or even part of the plan.

Social media is a fine example, Pete Blackshaw has just written about Twitters ROI over at AdAge. Great article. But, should we try and determine the ROI of our customer service staff interacting with clients?

What is the value of gratitude, appreciation, making someone’s day?

Engage first, business later.

As Seth wrote

Twitter is about building a foundation for what you can do next

It’s not the ‘next’.

Use Twitter to engage your customers, build trust and then, when they are ready, you will have the foundation to get some ROI.

Collecting Friends and Politics

Twitter USA

Even here in blighty we’ve noticed something is afoot in the good old United States of America, an election apparently! Now, as we do the odd bit of politics here in the UK I thought it would be interesting to see if there is anything we can learn from how McCain and Obama have been using the web.

In fact they are all over it, Facebook, Flickr, Bebo and Twitter, but so are our guys.

What’s interesting is that they seem to be friend collectors and don’t do a lot of posting. Here’s a chart showing Obama way ahead in the friend collecting stakes.

Obama has friends!

Obama has friends!

But, the most active Twitterer is Gordon Brown

The Numbers

So, if Obama wins next week then we can all say it was down to his friend collecting on Twitter, I mean why else? If he doesn’t then we can all say it was down to his friend collecting on Twitter!

From a UK standpoint it’s interesting to see that the Tories have given homepage advantage to their social media stuff.

Whereas the Labour Party don’t.

Another interesting point is that both McCain and Cameron (the right) use head shots for their Twitter profiles, while Obama and Brown (the left) use logos, interesting…

TwitterPay a Model for Profit

I know, first hand just how difficult it is to monetise a project, even if people love it, Cordiva asks how Twitter can monetise itself.

I think they really only have one choice – make a deal with the network to get a penny from each message sent to the service, this means no interuptive marketing, no extra cost to the user, no subscriptions just a little profit sharing, however they will need real scale.

Whatever the answer I hope they find one as it’s a great service, well except for the spam, which is pretty well contained.

You can follow me on Twitter here, it’s not war and peace but there again it is just 140 characters
